2021 Conservation Action Focus

World Ocean Day belongs to all groups, collectively everywhere. It’s about collaborating to help create a healthy ocean, a healthy climate, and a better future – together!

This year, World Ocean Day is promoting a new Conservation Action Focus to help unite the world to safeguard our blue planet home, with its shared ocean and climate.

We are encouraging all organizations and individuals involved with World Ocean Day to help with solutions to the issues by supporting the growing movementworldwideto protect at least 30% of our blue planet by 2030 (“30×30”). A healthy ocean is acritical part of the solution to the climate crisis. By supporting 30×30, we canprotect our planet’s life support systems – specifically the interconnected issues of ocean, climate, and biodiversity. And your organization can get involved!

Decisionsabout the future of our blue planetare being madethis year by world leaders, and theyneed to hear from organizations and individuals from all countries! The actions that our leaders take (or fail to take) this year will determine the health of our blue planet and food security of future generations for decades to come.

Team up with us and the World Ocean Day Youth Advisory Council, and together we will make a real difference! We hope you will incorporate this action focus into whatever type of activity, event, or celebration you plan for June. We will soon have more resources for your organization to get more involved in the action focus, including an organizational sign-on letter to join with thousands of other organizations involved with World Ocean Day to send to their national leaders and show their support for 30×30

Whether you organize a beach clean or a city cleanup, an online arts project or sustainable seafood event, you can also involve your participants by having them sign the petition to world leaders to protect at least 30% of our blue planet – the lands, fresh waters and ocean – by 2030.

And while 8 June is the singular day, it’s important to be involved throughout the year. Remember that with every other breath you take, the oxygen you breathe is produced by plants in the oceanEvery day the ocean is working for you, and we can do something to help support the ocean and its life.

To paraphrase U.S. President John F. Kennedy, “Ask not what our ocean can do for you, but what you can do for our ocean.”

Thank you for your involvement!
