Beach Clean-up at Miyajima

8 June @ 10:30 am - 11:30 am JST

Plastic pollution on our beaches and in our oceans threatens both animal and human life, especially when it breaks down into microplastics. Not only is it harmful to us, beach litter is unsightly and does not leave a positive impression on visitors to Hiroshima.

While the physical harm of microplastics may be hard for people who are not scientists to measure, the economic impact on a growing tourism industry is easier to observe.

As a Global Issues class, we want to document the plastic pollution at a beach on Miyajima Island, the home of a World Heritage Site. We want to assess the current situation with our own eyes. Twenty-five Global Issues students and two teachers will collect as much plastic trash as we can in one hour and weigh it.

Can the promotion of the SDGS, sustainable tourism, and beautification of local beaches help motivate local industries to adopt sustainable materials?
