Coral reefs, fish populations, a quarter of the world’s mangroves, seagrass beds, large marine wildlife, shorebirds, and seabirds all thrive in the Arafura and Timor Seas (ATS) area. As a result, this region offers essential ecosystem services to communities surrounding the ATS, while also contributing to global economic and ecological well-being.
The theme of this year’s United Nations World Oceans Day will be Revitalization: Collective Action for the Ocean. The ocean connects, sustains, and supports us all. Yet its health is at a tipping point and so is the well-being of all that depends on it.
