GUARDIANI DELLA COSTA (Guardians of the Coast), the environmental flagship program of Costa Crociere Foundation, is our way to share our love of the sea with new generations.
Upper secondary school teachers and students are involved in an online education and awareness program on Mediterranean marine environment, coastal biodiversity, plastic pollution and climate change issues.
They are invited to take their scientific understanding out of the classroom and into the field, to monitor an adopted stretch of coastline and feed data into a central database using a free mobile App specifically developed for the project. A team of biologists then validates all information collected and makes it available in an annual report with theme-based maps describing the state of Italian coastlines.
Launched in 2017, the project has involved 426 high schools throughout Italy so far, with more than 1,800 teachers and 12 thousand students who actively participated, collecting over 106 thousand scientific data related to Mediterranean biodiversity, marine litter and other environmental indicators.
Our “all-digital” education program was well prepared to face the challenge that the Covid-19 pandemic created to the traditional schools teaching approach. So nowadays teachers are taking advantage of Guardiani della Costa online assets (videos, webinars, tests) to deliver distance learning, and students are involved in home-based activities to increase their awareness on the impact of plastic waste in their daily life.
As part of the project scale-up, in 2020 we also developed new digital and interactive tools based on a playful-educational approach to involve children aged 8 to 13 y.o. and their teachers in primary and lower secondary schools, which can be downloaded for free from Educazionedigitale.it/guardianidellacosta. In a few months about 700 teachers have already registered from all over Italy.
For its commitment to the promotion of sustainability among young people, the project has received the patronage of the Italian Ministry of the Environment and Protection of Territory and Sea (MATTM) and the support of the Coast Guard, which has always been active in this field.
