The 2023 Lekan Bakare Foundation World Oceans Day Commemoration is set to honor and raise awareness on the plight of the Oceans and marine Ecosystem in Nigeria.
The goal of the event is to provide an opportunity for people to discover and understand the benefits of the ocean around us, how the ecosystem is threatened and how they can be conserved.
Lekan Bakare Foundation aims to utilize collaboration with Government, Organizations & Communities to foster positive Interaction with the Ocean in a sustainable manner that caters to our current needs and not compromise future generations.
The Commemoration is of an hybrid structure which involves;
1. An advocacy program hosted on Twitter Spaces for four consecutive Saturdays before & after June 8th ( i.e May 20th, May 27th, June 3rd & 10th).
The online advocacy will focus on ocean-related topics, stewardship, an overview of what the World Oceans Day is about and what Lekan Bakare Foundation stands for.
2. Beach clean-up; a huge part of the event program are the Ocean sanitary Exercises that will take place at the Elegushi Private Beach, Lagos.
Volunteers and participants of the Lekan Bakare Foundation are always keen on keeping Oceans clean and pollution free. Hence, they will be coming out on World Oceans Day to pick up litter, plastic bags, bottles and pollutants that have been discarded into the ocean.
3. A live streamed delivery of the annual message by the Secretary-General of the United Nations, which highlights the challenges faced by the oceans and marine ecosystems across the World. This will go along side physical presentations by speakers and marine practitioners on the importance of Sustainable Development Goal 14 and how well a habitable future can be achieved in the Ocean space.
On June 10th a conclusive advocacy will be held on a Twitter space to give reports on how the Lekan Bakare Foundation has impacted marine life and its communities on World Oceans Day.
