The annual Open Day (OD) of the Marine Biology Station Piran (National Institute of Biology; MBP-NIB) is organised as part of cooperative programmes with UNESCO to celebrate the World Ocean Day and to increase ocean literacy among the general public. OD is the main promotional activity of MBP-NIB and is very popular, especially among primary school children. Every year more than 300 pupils and their teachers from schools from all over Slovenia participate in thematic workshops and lectures about the sea. Why the protection of the sea is important, what are the consequences of pollution, what are the physical laws in the sea, how rich in species the sea is, and much more is taught by the staff of MBP-NIB in parallel thematic workshops. The Keynote lecture this year will be »Exploring the marine diversity of the Mediterranean Sea: experiences from Slovenia«. There will be also a short lectures “Researchers of the Marine Biological Station Piran; Who we are and what we do”, guided tours and thematic workshops for adolescents and children: Marine bacteria, The sea under the microscope, The diversity of marine organisms, Let‘s get to know the mussels, Scientific experiments with water, Minibar with algae, Women scientists who made history, and Working on the research vessel.
