The annual Open Day (OD) of the Piran Marine Biology Station (National Institute of Biology) is organised as part of cooperative programmes with UNESCO to celebrate World Ocean Day. OD is the main promotional activity of MBP-NIB and is very popular, especially among primary school children. Every year, more than 300 pupils and their teachers from schools from all over Slovenia participate in thematic workshops and lectures about the sea. Topics such as why the protection of the sea is important, what the consequences of pollution are, what the physical laws in the sea are, and how rich in species the sea is and much more is taught by the staff of MBP-NIB in parallel thematic workshops.
The Keynote lecture this year will be “Plastic pirates; plastic pollution in rivers, seas and oceans and what can we do about it”. There will be also a short lectures “Researchers of the Marine Biological Station Piran; Who we are and what we do”, guided tours and thematic workshops for adolescents and children: “The World in Small,” “The sea under the microscope,” “Diversity of marine organisms,” “Let’s learn about shells,” “Algal mini bar,” “Women scientists who made history,” and “Working on a research vessel.”
