For this year’s #ShowYourStripes Day on June 21, broadcast meteorologists and climate scientists united to raise awareness of the urgent need to act on climate change and call for more ambition on the road to COP26.
The stripes are data visualizations developed by Ed Hawkins, a climate scientist at the University of Reading in the United Kingdom and a lead author of the IPCC’s Sixth Assessment Report.
The graphics – available for almost every country on earth – show the change in temperature over at least the past 100 years. Each stripe represents the temperature in that country averaged over a year and is based on internationally recognized datasets.
The response was overwhelming: TV presenters from every continent used the occasion to highlight the warming in their country and explain the importance of a successful outcome at COP26 in November.
