Dare to enter the Octopus den wherein a ginormous, luminous creature is guarding her lair. Created by artists Jo Stacey with Michael Pope, The Giant Pacific Octopus is nesting at Murky Waters Studio. Join the artists exploring art and citizen science this June as we celebrate World Ocean Day. Reef Ecologic CEO Dr Adam Smith “is proud to be collaborating with the artists and this fabulous Octopus. They are looking forward to Reef Blitz and the citizen science projects as we celebrate World Ocean Day in the Great Barrier Reef.”
The octopus lantern installation introduces us to the curious, playful creature that is the octopus. The octopus has become the subject in films and documentaries for its intelligence, physiology, behaviour and other curious qualities. In this exhibition the mythical giant with its far reaching, tentacled form draws curious viewers into its private lair to celebrate World Ocean Day. The artists have created a full programme of events with lantern making workshops from the beautiful Butterfly fish to Regal Red Emperors. Reef Ecologic is leading Reef Blitz and collaborating to create marine citizen science experiences for the community between 1 and 8 June.
The exhibition opens 5:30 pm Friday 2 June and is followed at 6 pm by a Reef Blitz 2023 Townsville event led by Reef Ecologic. Get fishy creative as Jo Stacey and Michael Pope will teach lantern making workshops on Sundays 4 & 18 June at Murky Waters Studio.
The exhibition is open to the public on Sundays 9 am – 12 pm from 4 June to 25 June 2023 at Murky Waters Studio, located at 126 Hanran Street, Townsville City, down the laneway just across the road from McDonalds between Jax Tyres and Simon George.
