Celebrate World Ocean Day with a Turtle Nesting Beach Clean up
Register online at WaterWarriorAlliance.org
Please join us, as we celebrate World Ocean Day by cleaning up a turtle nesting area on Madeira Beach. The event will start at 4:30 pm, on June 8, at Archibald Beach Park, 15100 Gulf Blvd., Madeira Beach.
Special Thanks to House Representative Linda Chaney. In conjunction with the event, Duke Energy is installing amber lighting on Madeira Beach, to deter the nesting turtles from the street lights that they often mistake for the moon. The amber lighting will make it easier for the turtles to find their nests, as well.
The event, hosted by Water Warrior Alliance, will feature a raffle, gift baskets and one free drink, from Saltwater Hippie and Stream2sea reef safe sunblock. Jenna Byrne, president of the Water Warrior Alliance said they are expecting a great turnout, but can always use more volunteers to help prepare the beach for nesting season.
The event will kick off with guest speakers, including State House Representative, Linda Chaney. Chaney’s continued support for this event, as well as many of our other cleanups help make them possible. Other speakers include CIty of Madeira Beach Mayor, John Hendrix.
A representative from Duke Energy will detail the turtle lighting plan, which will have an instant positive effect on turtle nesting on Madeira Beach.
We will also hear from Keep Pinellas Beautiful Executive Director, Pat DePlasco about their constant efforts to improve the environment. Saltwater Hippie will share the great work they have been doing, as well.
Lastly, Yvette Fernandez, Senior BIologist with the Sea Turtle Conservation Program, at Clearwater Marine Aquarium will speak. Volunteers will be stationed near the nests to share additional facts about the turtles, their habitat and how we can best ensure their success as a species.
Please join us to learn, listen and clean up the beach for Madeira Beach’s other inhabitants.
