UN Ocean Conference in Lisbon
27 June, 2022 @ 8:00 am - 1 July, 2022 @ 5:00 pm EDT
The UN Ocean Conference, co-hosted by the Governments of Kenya and Portugal, kicks off next week from June 27-July 1. To mobilize action, the Conference will seek to propel much needed science-based innovative solutions aimed at starting a new chapter of global ocean action in pursuit of Sustainable Development Goal 14.
US Leaders from Congress and the administration are expected to attend. For US ocean advocates, this provides an important opportunity to push our leaders to do more for ocean climate action at home. The Biden administration has established many ambitious goals related to climate and the ocean, including the development and implementation of a comprehensive ocean climate action plan as part of its emissions reduction strategy–but that has not yet occurred. Meanwhile, comprehensive climate legislation remains stalled in the Senate, with growing concerns on maintaining important ocean and coastal provisions (passed in the House last December in HR 5376, the Build Back Better Act) as the final package is negotiated.
Please use the materials below to encourage US decisionmakers to take decisive action to restore American leadership in the global effort to turn the course on climate change and to highlight new ocean climate commitments as they are announced. We will be updating the toolkit and adding additional content to amplify throughout the week!
