World Ocean Day – Action for biodiversity and climate – Ecosurf

10 June, 2023

World Ocean Day – Action for Biodiversity and Climate
June 10th 9:00am to 12:00pm 5:30pm to 8:00pm

In celebration of Environment Week and World Oceans Day, the Ecosurf Institute and partners came together to carry out a collective action in the municipality of Imbituba/ Santa Catarina/ Brazil. The event will be divided into two different times and places during the day. In the morning we will have an environmental awareness activity on Imbituba beach (Porto), with educational stands of local projects aimed at conserving the environment and marine life.
During this period we will talk about the importance of actions on World Ocean Day, how we can defend and preserve a minimum of 30% of our lands, waters and oceans by 2030, preserving biodiversity, building a lush ocean and balanced, home to thriving wildlife, while stabilizing the climate.
After the conversation, the participants will be divided into groups and we will carry out a beach cleaning action with monitoring of garbage, plastic and at the end of the action we will make a diagnosis of the material found and talk about the impact of marine pollution on the life of the planet.
At the end of the afternoon, the event continues from 5:30 pm in the space of the Museu Nacional da Baleia Franca, where an open exhibition of local environmental documentaries related to the protection of natural environments, responsibility citizenship and actions to combat the spread of litter at sea. It is worth mentioning that the city of Imbituba is a kind of nursery of the endangered whale, Eubalaena australis, and it almost became extinct because there was a hunting center in the area, and today the species is protected by law, and the shed that was previously used for whaling activity, today serves as a point of education and culture. This proves how much we can rethink, change our habits and build a better future.

Together with the Ecosurf Institute, this event is being developed collectively with representatives:
– ASAEP – Association of Friends of Surf and Ecologists of Praia do Porto;
– PMP/UDESC;

– Museu Nacional Baleia Franca

– SEMA – Secretary of Environment of Imbituba;

– Australis Institute;
– Angela Amin School;
– Residents, surfers, local leaders and volunteers.

We invite everyone to stay tuned for actions through our social networks and our official website.
