This session will be hosted by Joana Da Rosa, the Portuguese World Ocean Day Youth Advisor. In this session, a message from the Portuguese Minister of Maritime Affairs, Dr. Ricardo Serrão Santos, will be transmitted, where he answers some questions related to the National Sea Strategy for 2030 and the # 30×30 goal, of protecting 30% of the Ocean under Portuguese jurisdiction by 2030.
Then, we will hear a word from Emanuel Gonçalves, Chief Scientist and Board Member at the Oceano Azul Foundation, Associate Professor at ISPA – Instituto Universitário and a Researcher at MARE – Marine and Environmental Sciences Centre. A marine ecologist and conservationist author/co-author of more than 80 scientific publications in international journals. Was deputy-head of the Portuguese Task Group for Maritime Affairs that developed the Portuguese Ocean Strategy, and is a Member of the National Council of Environment and Sustainable Development. In this segment, Emanuel will present the RISE UP Initiative – A Blue Call to Action, and explain the importance of Marine Protected Areas for Ocean Conservation.
Finally, we will hear from Norberto Serpa. Norberto was born in the Azores, where he worked as a fisherman & became a technician at the Department of Oceanography and Fisheries at the University of the Azores. He started his own dive company, Norberto Divers, which has become world renowned for whale watching, swimming with dolphins, and coastal shark diving tours. A Man of the Sea and a great mentor, Norberto will give his testimony about the changes in the Ocean that he has been witnessing and about the importance of the terms of preserving.
