On World Ocean Day (8th June 2021), countries from all four corners of the world – from India to Guyana, South Korea to Austria have pledged to support the ‘30 by 30’ commitment which is being championed by the UK-led Global Ocean Alliance and the High Ambition Coalition for Nature and People, co-chaired by the UK, Costa Rica and France.
This next milestone follows a successful meeting of the G7 Climate and Environment ministers, during which all members agreed to champion the global ‘30×30’ target to conserve or protect at least 30 percent of the world’s land and at least 30 percent of the world’s ocean by 2030, as well as committing to ‘30 x 30’ domestically.

During this discussion, Chair of the Marine protected Areas Advisory Group, Prof. Tasman Crowe will explain what marine protected areas are, the benefits of them and how we all can get involved in stating what parts are most important to us and the environment. In Ireland we have a unique opportunity now to have our say on what areas of our ocean and seas we deem most important to be protected. The Public Consultation on the expert advisory group report entitled “Expanding Ireland’s Marine Protected Area Network”, is currently open and Clean Coasts is asking everyone to get involved and ensure their views are heard by filling out the online survey before the deadline of 30th July 2021.

On 8th June at 9 am – Jump into this World Ocean Day with A Virtual Dive Through a Rocky Reef in Strangford Lough
This virtual dive will take you on an underwater journey at the seabed of Strangford Lough! Strangford Lough supports diverse and colourful marine species communities for which it is designated as a Marine Conservation Zone and we want to explore it with you!
