Vanessa Rodriguez (she/her) is a 18-year-old passionate advocate for environmental sustainability, with a strong focus on reducing plastic waste and promoting eco-friendly practices in her community. Growing up in Venezuela, Vanessa witnessed firsthand the effects of a broken economy and corruption, which fueled her determination to create positive change. After immigrating to the United States, she became deeply involved in sustainability efforts, particularly through her work with the Plastic Free Cities Program.
As a key participant in the Plastic Free 305 initiative, Vanessa has canvassed local businesses, encouraging them to eliminate single-use plastics and adopt greener practices. Her dedication to the cause resulted in the successful signing of businesses like Cuento Sandwiches for Tier 2 of the program, while her continued efforts with other establishments reflect her perseverance, even when facing setbacks. She understands the importance of collaboration and education in promoting sustainable change and has used these principles to mentor others in the program, expanding the reach of Plastic Free 305.
Vanessa’s passion for sustainability extends beyond her immediate community. Through her involvement in the Sea Youth Rise Up Program (SYRUP), she has taken her advocacy to a broader platform, connecting with like-minded individuals and organizations to address pressing environmental challenges. Her commitment to preserving the oceans and reducing plastic pollution is evident in her leadership in her own school Green Club, where she runs a recycling and gardening program, and mentorship roles, where she helps guide the next generation of environmental advocates.
With her passion for environmental justice, leadership, and education, Vanessa is well on her way to becoming a leading voice in sustainability advocacy. Through her efforts with Plastic Free 305, SYRUP, and beyond, she demonstrates a tireless commitment to building a more sustainable future for all.
