AIS Forum: Ocean Awareness Mural Painting

8 June, 2022

The Archipelagic and Island States Forum (AIS Forum) was initiated in 2017 as a platform to bring together 47 archipelagic and island states to collaborate on the following four thematic areas of cooperation:

i) climate change mitigation and adaptation, and disaster management;
ii) the blue economy;
iii) marine plastic debris;
and iv) good maritime governance.

The AIS Forum was established as an open-ended, complementary, integrated, and inclusive developmental forum with regular meetings in synergy with other development initiatives. The AIS Forum serves as a platform for meaningful collaboration and the sharing of expertise to generate inclusive, smart and innovative solutions among archipelagic and island states and their collaborative partners.

People across the globe join to celebrate our shared blue planet and undertake steps in protection of our oceans and climate and connect us all. Over 70% of the globe is covered by water. It is our life supply, sustaining humanity as well as all other organisms on the planet. To safeguard and maintain the ocean and everything it supports, we must strike a new balance based on a real understanding of the ocean and humanity’s relationship with it. Art helps to convey strong emotions. The psychology behind public engagement suggests that the visual narratives provided through art help people process, internalize, relate and respond to information more effectively than facts alone. By molding their experiences into an opportunity for emotional connection, artists form a keystone between the viewer and the message behind the art.

The AIS Forum was established to bring together archipelagic and island states to share knowledge about how we can progress sustainably. Art is a form of expression, with that in mind the AIS Forum will organize a Mural painting under the World Ocean Day theme in collaboration with the University of Mauritius and its students. This event will bring together students to paint a mural at the University of Mauritius, this mural in honor of the ocean will remain at the university for years and will represent a long-lasting- symbol of the ocean’s importance, the youth’s pledge to climate action and ultimately, the collaboration between the University and the AIS forum.
