Sing out to the Ocean-from Ísafjörður, West Iceland – looking out to Ísafjardardjúp towards Drangajökull glacier, out across the Denmark Strait, and on to the melting Greenland ice sheet…
Sing out to the Ocean-from Papa Westray island in the North of the Orkney Islands, out to the Holm of Papay and beyond to the vast North Sea.
Sing out to the Ocean-from the town of Stourbridge, England, calling out to the surrounding coastlines and across the seas.
The power of our voices moves over and under the waves, crossing great distances, connecting each other with the ocean.
On World Ocean Day, the children from the Sólborg kindergarten school in Ísafjörður, Westfjordlands, Iceland; the Papay community choir on the island of Papa Westray in the Orkney Islands and the Stream of Sound choir in the middle of England, will stand together on their island shores and sing out to the ocean. “Our voices will carry our hopes for the ocean, travelling over and under the waves. We care for our deep blue ocean. We know it is our future”
This creative ‘ocean collaboration’ project is part of a series of #Embrace the Sea projects exploring future collaborations with the sea. https://www.saoirsehiggins.org/art-projects/curam-cuain-embrace-the-sea
The project was created by ArtsIceland ‘Ísafjörður hub’ artist in resident Saoirse Higgins, in collaboration with ‘Papay hub’ artist and ranger Jonathan Ford, Leikskólinn Sólborg teacher, Ragúel Hagalínsson and Papay choir project co-ordinator Rosemary Merrimen.
Supported by ArtsIceland, The Arts Council Ireland Agility Award.
