Planet Ocean

This summer for the first time in Peñasco, Las Palomas Beach Resort, plastic artist Memuco and CEDO the Intercultural Center for the Study of Desert and Oceans, present the “Planet ocean: tides are changing”. 

Puerto Peñasco is located in the northern Gulf of California known also as the sea of Cortez and named by Jaques Custeau the world aquarium. Here, locals and visitors enjoy the best beaches on Sonora and the closest to Arizona, Peñasco is a  place to join, and not only for people but for outstanding biodiversity. 

The Northern gulf presents several oceanographic features that make it unique among semi-enclosed seas of similar latitude and dimensions, the most important being strong tidal mixing, some of it close to deep stratification. Tides in the Gulf of California are amongst the greatest in the world with tide ranges exceeding 33ft (7m) and an amplitude 73 ft (10m).

The Sea of Cortez is megadiverse on marine mammals 36 species representing 31 cetaceans in eight families (Balaenidae, Eschrichtiidae, Balaenopteridae, Physeteridae, Kogiidae, Ziphiidae, Delphinidae, Phocoenidae), four pinnipeds in two families (Phocidae, and Otariidae). 

From July the 18th to 23rd (6pm- 9 pm), Las Palomas, Memuco and CEDO, will organize a series of family events hands on activities, movies, talks, exhibits, gift shops and food with a purpose, rise awareness and appreciation about the vaquita and marine mammals, while keep the celebration of the world ocean week 2023, the international vaquita day and the world whale and dolphins day.
