Bayardo Eguigurems is a young Honduran professional from Tegucigalpa and holds a degree in International Relations. He is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Economy and Finance, with a growing focus on climate finance, sustainable development, and nature-based solutions. With over three years of experience, he has supported initiatives related to climate finance mobilization, sustainability, and the financing of climate action across Central America and beyond.

His experience includes working with the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI) the local MDB for Central Amercian Countries, where he supported efforts to advance climate finance and the financing of mitigation, adaptation, and conservation initiatives across the region. Among his work, he contributed to the launch of a flagship initiative aimed at mobilizing financing for the conservation and restoration of the Mesoamerican Reef System, the second-largest reef system in the world and one of the most important marine ecosystems in the region. It was through this work that Bayardo developed a deeper passion for protecting marine ecosystems and the natural heritage of Honduras and Central America. These ecosystems are home to thousands of species and provide essential economic resources and livelihoods for local communities, while Honduras and the broader Central American region are home to extraordinary marine biodiversity that faces growing pressures and requires greater investment in its protection and sustainable management.

He has also worked as a climate finance and access-to-finance consultant, contributing to institutional accreditation processes with the Green Climate Fund (GCF) and supporting the development and mobilization of financing for climate and conservation projects. He is currently involved in the CMAR initiative, a regional effort seeking to mobilize financing for conservation projects along the Pacific coast of Costa Rica, Panama, Ecuador, and Colombia, including key ecosystems and territories such as the Galápagos Islands and Cocos Island, with support from institutions and stakeholders across the participating countries.

Currently, Bayardo is an intern with the Mitigation Division of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), where he supports research and the review of methodologies related to carbon markets and Article 6.4 of the Paris Agreement. He is particularly interested in connecting international climate finance with the needs of vulnerable countries, communities, and ecosystems in the Global South. Through his work, Bayardo hopes to contribute to climate and conservation solutions that are environmentally meaningful and capable of strengthening resilience, protecting the ocean and biodiversity, and advancing sustainable development in Honduras, Central America, and beyond.

Bayardo is very excited and proud to become the first Honduran and Central American to serve on the Youth Council, where he hopes to bring the perspectives, experiences, and priorities of Central America to the global conversation on ocean conservation and climate action. As a region endowed with extraordinary marine biodiversity and ecosystems, yet highly vulnerable to climate change and environmental pressures, Central America has unique experiences and challenges that deserve greater representation. Through this platform, Bayardo hopes to help amplify the voices of young people from the region and contribute to advancing solutions that protect its ocean, biodiversity, and the communities whose livelihoods depend on them.
