The Ocean and Us: The Power of Ocean literacy- Webinar

12 June @ 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm BST

Join World Ocean Day and Ocean Generation in a free webinar especially created to celebrate World Ocean Day, that covers how to build a stronger understanding of Ocean literacy and its potential to transform society’s relationship with the Ocean. This webinar will dive into just how connected we are to the Oceans and the Oceans are to us, and why we should consider this relationship when advocating for a healthy ocean.

Topics we’ll cover:

  • What Ocean literacy is and why it matters
  • How young people can lead the way in Ocean advocacy
  • Practical ways to take action to protect our Ocean
  • How Ocean literacy can shape a more sustainable future

Meet the hosts:

Charlene Desouza: Youth Advisory Council Member| World Ocean Day

Charlene (she/her) is a passionate marine biology graduate and aspiring environmental advocate dedicated to Ocean conservation. Her research has explored the impacts of climate change, pollution, and microplastics on marine life, and is now driven to raise awareness, inspire change, and empower communities to protect our Ocean, specifically through engaging people with the concept of Ocean literacy.

Dr. Gemma Connell: Youth Engagement Lead| Ocean Generation

Dr Gemma Connell runs our Wavemaker programme across the UK and beyond. Prior to joining Ocean Generation, Gemma spent 15 years in the performing arts industry as a choreographer, theatre maker and producer before switching to a career in science communication. Despite working for an Ocean charity, she’s not a very strong swimmer but is a little bit obsessed with sting rays!
