Action: Support Strong Marine Protected Areas

Why Marine Protected Areas

Most people are unfamiliar with marine protected areas (MPAs). Many more know and care about national parks. But people are overwhelmingly supportive of MPAs once they learn about what they are and why they matter. And people who appreciate special places along the coasts and in the ocean often take action to protect those areas.

Strongly protected and regulated MPAs play a central role in restoring the health of the ocean and safeguarding biodiversity. Properly managed MPAs help rebuild fish populations; protect vital habitats like coral reefs and mangrove forests; provide natural solutions to climate impacts and strengthen the resilience of marine ecosystems facing threats from our rapidly changing climate, pollution, and overfishing. No matter where we live, each of us can advocate for stronger protections in coastal nations and on the High Seas that benefit communities, wildlife, and the overall stability of our blue planet.

This month, learn more about MPAs and the World Ocean Day 2026 Action Theme as well as how you can get involved in making a difference!
