Communities closest to the ocean, so often led by women, hold generations of knowledge about the sea and a deep, lived stake in its health. Research shows that women-led fishing cooperatives demonstrate stronger compliance with sustainable practices and that communities where women hold leadership roles manage natural resources more equitably and with longer term thinking. Advancing gender equity in ocean conservation is not a side agenda or a social add on. It is a core strategy, because protecting our ocean depends on the full participation of the people who know it best.
