Real MPA or paper park?

About This Event

To support the 2026 WOD action theme, “Strong Marine Protected Areas for our blue planet,” the Sea Around Us initiative, based at the University of British Columbia (Vancouver, Canada), has been taking, every month from January up to June, a deep dive into one MPA in its database.

Using its own blogging space, we have been sharing, in lay language, what factors make it a successful or unsuccessful MPA.

We hope that this work supports efforts to build on the momentum of recent agreements, such as the 2022 Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework and the High Seas Treaty ratified in 2025, and push for stronger ocean conservation actions.
