National Day Of The Sea & World Ocean Day 2026 – MPA Journey: Promoting and Protecting the Ocean for a Sustainable Future

On 5 June 2026, Beni-Marine Timor-Leste, a private company dedicated to marine education, marine conservation, sustainable ocean development, and the promotion of the Blue Economy, proudly participated in the celebration of National Sea Day and World Ocean Day 2026 in Maquili, Atauro Island, under the theme “MPA Journey: Promoting and Protecting the Ocean for Sustainability.”
This event was organized in collaboration with the Atauro Administrative Authority, local organizing committee, and the Atecro community, bringing together government representatives, coastal communities, fishers, youth, religious groups, and partner organizations to strengthen marine conservation and Blue Economy awareness in Timor-Leste.
The program began with a coastal clean-up campaign involving local fishers, community members, youth, and the Beni-Marine team, focusing on reducing plastic pollution and protecting coastal ecosystems. Educational activities followed, including marine-themed painting and awareness sessions for students from Atecro Basic School.
Community outreach sessions were conducted on responsible Blue Economy practices, plastic waste management, and the importance of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs), delivered by relevant organizations and partners.
Participants also joined snorkeling activities inside the Atecro Marine Protected Area, allowing direct observation of marine biodiversity and ecosystem health. In addition, Beni-Marine facilitated an interactive educational “Fishing Game” simulation, helping participants understand sustainable fisheries management and the importance of MPAs in a fun and practical way.
The event concluded with cultural performances, community celebration, and documentation activities featuring local music groups, strengthening unity and awareness for ocean conservation.
This initiative reinforces collective responsibility to protect marine ecosystems and promote sustainable ocean use for present and future generations.
