World Ocean Day at Sully da Rosa Vilarinho State School
To celebrate World Ocean Day, we visited Sully da Rosa Vilarinho State School and engaged approximately 350 students and 30 teachers in a day dedicated to ocean literacy, marine conservation, and environmental awareness.
The event was organized by the Marine Geochemistry and Pollution Laboratory (LAGPOM), coordinated by Dr. Tatiane Combi, in partnership with the MarMaré Environmental Education Program and other laboratories from the Center for Marine Studies (CEM).
Our goal was to bring the ocean into the school through a variety of interactive and educational activities. Students participated in educational games, talks, hands-on experiments, and biological exhibitions featuring marine and coastal species from our region. They also attended documentary film sessions on marine pollution, marine wildlife rehabilitation, and ocean health, highlighting challenges and conservation efforts within our coastal territory.
An additional activity, the Ocean Music Room, invited students to listen to songs inspired by the ocean, including works by artists such as Jack Johnson and Ziggy Alberts. Song lyrics were available, and students were encouraged to reflect on their feelings and perceptions of the ocean through a short questionnaire, exploring how music can inspire environmental connection and awareness.
Students also participated in an Ocean-Themed Drawing Contest, expressing their creativity and their vision of the ocean through art. The winning drawings were recognized with small prizes and sweets, creating a fun and engaging way to celebrate the day.
Throughout the event, each participating laboratory hosted an activity station. Students received a “Science Passport” and collected stamps as they visited each stand. After completing their passports, they received a small educational gift, encouraging curiosity, participation, and engagement with all the activities.
By combining science, art, music, and hands-on learning, the event created meaningful opportunities for young people to explore ocean-related themes, understand the importance of marine ecosystems, and recognize their role in protecting the ocean for future generations.
