World Ocean Day, a day in which the world celebrates the importance of protecting the oceans and all marine animals and organisms, is often celebrated by cleaning a beach as an opportunity to give back, to respect and appreciate what the oceans give us.
And this year this day came with perfect timing – we were lucky to experience the rare and historic visit of the monk seal Yulia, who moved an entire country and reminded us that it is still possible to bring back marine animals that have almost disappeared from the Israeli consciousness, to our shores. And will only happen, if we know how to appreciate and preserve what we have and help restore its habitats and make the beaches a friendly environment for wildlife, once again.
When Yulia arrived as a surprise, we also saw how dirty the beach she came to and where she spent most of her time, Midron Jaffa Park Beach, was with plastic waste, construction waste and more. So here is the first step we can take for her and for the beaches, the seas and the oceans – join us this Oceans Day, on 9.6 to clean the beach at Midron Jaffa Park and join the movement to protect the beaches and reduce our plastic consumption!
In cooperation between Green Tel Aviv Jaffa, Plastic Free Israel and the Mediterranean Sea Guard, we will clean Midron Jaffa beach between 9:00-11:00 with reusable gloves and reused bags alongside a diving cleanup that will take place at Givat Aliya beach between 8:00-10:00 and led by Mediterranean Sea Guard (for details and joining the clean-up dive Contact the Sea Guard).
