About This Event

Exploration of tide pools for children under 12 years old, with accompanying adults. The goal is to foster scientific curiosity and environmental awareness through direct observation of biodiversity in intertidal pools, promoting respect for marine ecosystems, understanding of organismal adaptations, and a minimum-impact approach to field exploration.
Specific objectives:
1. Identify shapes, colors, textures, and behaviors of intertidal organisms such as crabs, snails, limpets, sea urchins, anemones, and algae.
2. Explain basic concepts of adaptation, camouflage, feeding, refuge, and tolerance to the extreme conditions of the intertidal zone.
3. Apply responsible exploration rules: walk carefully, avoid unnecessary handling, return any observed organism to its original location, and leave no waste.
Engage parents and guardians as allies in safety, observation, and habitat care.
Event organization description:
Participants will meet at the rocky shore in front of the El Caracol viewpoint. The activity will include registration, name tags, clothing and footwear check, and a safety briefing. Exploration will begin shortly before 8:00 to take advantage of the estimated 8:35 low tide. Participants will be organized into small teams of five children. The instructor and advisors will guide organism searches, basic identification, and minimal, respectful handling when appropriate. The activity will close with a brief group conversation on what was observed and everyday actions to protect intertidal areas.

40 printed intertidal exploration guides
Models or illustrated sheets of intertidal organisms
Drinking water and reusable or compostable cups
First-aid kit
Bags for collecting any pre-existing litter found at the site
