About This Event
Asmaa Gamal (she/her) is a 21-year-old youth advocate for sustainability and ocean conservation representing Egypt. She grew up with deep curiosity about the natural world around her and she has always been inspired by the ocean’s endless ability to adapt that’s always reminded her of the importance of resilience.
Ever since she was young, Asmaa has been fascinated by the environment and the way ecosystems work together. She found herself curious about how life in water, on land and in the air are all connected in some way that she didn’t understand it then. But over time, this curiosity grew into a sense of responsibility. Learning about issues like pollution and climate change showed her that ecosystems are fragile and that protecting them is not only important but also urgent and she wanted to be part of it.
Asmaa recently graduated from Benha University with a degree in Agricultural Sciences. During her studies, she became especially interested in how aquaculture and environmental sustainability are linked. This focus led her to participate in international programs and internships with the National Institute of Oceanography and Fisheries (NIOF), the International Ocean Institute (IOI), and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). Through these opportunities, she explored topics such as climate-smart aquaculture, sustainable coastal tourism, fisheries management and the integration of the Sustainable Development Goals into marine and agricultural practices.
These experiences shaped her belief more about conservation and that is not just about protecting one species or one place — it is about understanding connections across whole ecosystems and finding solutions that support both people and nature. Also Meeting peers and experts from different countries helped her see the global vision of environmental challenges while giving her hope that collaboration can lead to actually real change.
Alongside her studies, Asmaa began working with organizations where she could put this knowledge into practice. As a Research and Development Specialist at BEZRAH, she focuses on urban farming and hydroponics as innovative ways to produce food more sustainably and ease pressure on natural ecosystems. She also works as a Content Creator for GreenAura, where she develops blogs about climate change and sustainability. These roles show her how local actions can contribute to global solutions.
Her friends and colleagues describe her as passionate, adaptable and committed to learning. She values teamwork, enjoys sharing ideas, and is motivated by the belief that young people have a big powerful role in shaping the future.
For Asmaa, the environment is both a source of inspiration and a call to action. As a member of the World Ocean Day Youth Advisory Council, she is really honored to represent Egypt, share
perspectives from her region and contribute to creative solutions that protect ecosystems and support a thriving ocean for generations to come.
