Open Day of the Piran Marine Biology Station (National Institute of Biology)

About This Event

The annual Open Day (OD) of the Piran Marine Biology Station (National Institute of Biology; MBP-NIB) is organised as part of cooperative programmes with UNESCO to celebrate the World Oceans Day and to increase ocean literacy among the general public. OD is the main promotional activity of MBP-NIB and is very popular, especially among primary school children. Every year more than 300 pupils and their teachers from schools from all over Slovenia participate in thematic workshops and lectures about the sea. Why the protection of the sea is important, what are the consequences of pollution, what are the physical laws in the sea, how rich in species the sea is, and much more is taught by the staff of MBP-NIB in parallel thematic workshops. The Keynote lecture this year will be “Anthropocene Sea”. There will be also a short lectures “What do we do at the Marine Biology Station Piran?”, guided tours and thematic workshops for adolescents and children: World in a miniature, The sea under the microscope, The diversity of marine organisms, Marine superheroes: mission without plastics, Experiments with water, Algal minibar and ice cream making, Discover the deep blue: Challenge of underwater life, Work on the research vessel and Luminiscence of diatoms.
