Out of the Blue, a Denman Island Pageant: Wedding of Wonder – Octopus Marries the Ocean

About This Event

The Octopus and the Ocean request the honour of our community’s presence at their wedding, when they merge their worlds forever. They are deeply in love and they call all of us creatures of the coast to celebrate their magical union!

The pageant includes a procession culminating in a wedding for all to witness at the shore.

The procession includes a 30’ Water Dragon named Queen Vaporia, mermaids and other costumed devotees of the ocean, including a colourful school of fish on sticks. We will enjoy chant, wind chimes and conch blowing as we parade.

At the ocean shore, we will welcome the Octopus bride and attendants and will witness this Wedding of Wonder.

We will be entertained by music, song, dance and spoken word. The exchange of vows is not to be missed.

As you can appreciate, Octopus and Ocean’s love story is poetic, symbolic and deeply romantic. They are soul mates. Our Giant Pacific Octopus here in BC is the largest octopus in the world. Our Octopus is highly intelligent, versatile, protective and truly a worthy partner.

This pageant will be emotional and theatrical with an ecological, activist under-theme. The octopus breathes seawater and is completely dependent on the ocean for its food and shelter. We humans love our Ocean and its creatures and we need to protect what Octopus and Ocean share. Pollution, warming, acidification and overfishing, all
adversely affect this sacred union.

The understory may be tragic, but, with the characters involved, you can expect some comic aspects.

Our event is posted on the World Ocean Day site and we unite in spirit with events that are happening that same weekend, around the world.

The wedding couple requests no gifts be brought to the wedding. Any donations will be welcome and transferred to ADIMS (Assoc for Denman Island Marine Stewards)
