Veivueti Kids Ocean Conference 2026 – Nurturing Ocean Literacy in the Pacific

About This Event

The Veivueti Kids Ocean Conference is an officially endorsed UN Ocean Decade Activity based in Fiji, designed to transform students from passive learners into active ocean stewards. Rooted in the iTaukei spirit of veivueti—uplifting one another—this youth-led initiative empowers students aged 8–16 to research, collaborate, and present solutions to global ocean challenges within their local context.

The journey begins in the field. Students conduct original, place-based research on issues relevant to their communities and Fiji, such as parrotfish and the impacts of overfishing on reefs, the connection between land-based actions and ocean health, and coral monitoring. Through this process, students bridge Indigenous knowledge and Western science, developing a deeper, more holistic understanding of the ocean.

The conference culminates in a vibrant, “for kids, by kids” event, where delegates present their findings, exchange ideas, and inspire one another across schools. This moment of sharing strengthens student voice and builds a sense of collective responsibility for ocean stewardship.

A defining feature of Veivueti is its strong partnerships with local marine experts and NGOs. Through hands-on workshops and immersive field experiences, these partners provide students with technical skills, mentorship, and real-world insight. Whether exploring traditional sailing, investigating freshwater biodiversity, or learning about Fiji’s shark populations, students are supported to follow their passions.

By fostering collaboration between youth, experts, and community leaders, the Veivueti Kids Ocean Conference is nurturing the next generation of Pacific leaders committed to a healthy, resilient ocean.
