World Ocean Day 2026: Our Ocean, Our Responsibility
The Association for Community Awareness (ASCOA), a leading environmental and community development non-profit organization based in Cameroon, is proud to organize a week-long celebration of World Ocean Day 2026 from June 8–13, 2026 under the theme “Our Ocean, Our Responsibility.”
Established in 2014 and headquartered in Buea, Cameroon, ASCOA is dedicated to improving the quality of life in underserved communities through sustainable development, environmental protection, and community empowerment. Over the years, ASCOA has become nationally recognized for its leadership in marine conservation, plastic pollution advocacy, and community-driven beach cleanup initiatives across Cameroon’s coastline.
Since 2018, ASCOA has successfully mobilized more than 6,332 volunteers through 37 beach cleanup initiatives, resulting in the removal of over 2,554 tons of marine litter from coastal communities. In addition, the organization has trained 108 beach cleanup coordinators and provided environmental media training to 20 journalists from major Cameroonian media houses to strengthen national awareness and advocacy for ocean protection. ASCOA proudly represents Ocean Conservancy in Cameroon and contributes cleanup data to both local authorities and global marine pollution initiatives.
Building on this experience, the 2026 World Ocean Day celebration aims to mobilize young people, coastal communities, environmental advocates, and volunteers to take collective action against marine pollution while promoting environmental education and sustainable coastal practices.
The week-long celebration will feature:
• A 2-week digital awareness campaign on ocean conservation and plastic pollution
• A World Ocean Day educational webinar on June 8 focused on marine conservation and coastal ecosystem challenges in Cameroon
• Community awareness and environmental education activities at the Batoke, coastal community in Limbe.
• Youth engagement through sports, cultural exchange, and team-building game based activities.
• A large-scale beach cleanup on June 13, 2026 involving over 150 volunteers from Buea, Limbe, and surrounding communities
The cleanup exercise at Batoke Beach will focus on removing plastic waste and marine debris while educating participants and local residents on responsible waste management, environmental stewardship, and the urgent need to protect marine ecosystems for future generations.
Through this initiative, ASCOA seeks to strengthen youth participation in environmental action, encourage community ownership of ocean conservation efforts, and contribute to global efforts aimed at reducing marine pollution and protecting biodiversity.
