World Ocean Day Celebrations

About This Event

World Ocean Day is about making connections and this year our centre was full of energy as we brought the secrets of the ocean to our local community. We had a mix of people visiting us. From curious locals to a lively group of students on a field trip. All excited to learn about the wonders of our Ocean Gallery.
Exploring the Blue Planet
The day started with guided tours of the gallery. We wanted to give our visitors an idea of what the ocean is like so we had special sessions throughout the day. Our “Life in Ocean” segment showed how many different types of animals and plants live in the ocean while “Ocean Features. Underwater and Above Water” taught visitors about the amazing things that shape our coastlines and sea floors. We also showed some videos from the United Nations Environment Programme to remind everyone why we need to protect the ocean.
We had a quiz about the ocean that was open to everyone. It was fun to see people competing with each other to see who knew the most.
Our “Reimagine with Ocean” activity was really creative. We gave visitors sticky notes and asked them to write down their ideas and hopes for the oceans future. By the end of the day our display board was covered in a mix of thoughts and ideas from the community.
Memories to Take Home
We encouraged our visitors to take photos with our attractions like the big Blue Whale and the Marine Ecosystem exhibits.
When it was time to leave we gave each visitor a badge with a picture of an ocean creature on it. It was a gift to remind them of the amazing animals that live in the ocean. Looking back it was great to see many people leave with a new sense of wonder and a deeper love, for the World Ocean. World Ocean Day was a success and we are already looking forward to next years World Ocean Day.
