Small time commitment:
Promote the 30×30 QR code
Wherever possible online or in person, use the 30×30 QR code poster and/or social media graphics to invite people to take action.
Time commitment: 10 minutes to prepare, little management required
Ideas and resources:
- Use the World Ocean Day social media toolkit to promote 30×30 actions online
- Display the 30×30 poster at your welcome table, entrance, or any strategic place where you are holding your event
- Include the 30×30 QR code on your website and in your promotional materials for your event
- For any presentation or online event, incorporate the 30×30 QR code on a slide to display while waiting to start or as a final slide for your presentation
- Send the 30×30 QR code as part of an email follow up to help attendees stay engaged and include a suggestion to spread the word to their personal networks
Medium time commitment:
Educate attendees and actively ask them to take action
Include 5-20 minutes during your event to inform your attendees about 30×30 and ask them to take action. You can also invite them to spread the word to their friends to help scale their impact!
Time commitment: 30 minutes to prepare, some management required
Ideas and resources:
- At some point during your event, make an announcement about taking action for 30×30 and then give everyone 1 minute to scan the 30×30 QR code and take the action right then and there! Tip: make sure you have a plan to display or distribute the QR code, either on a presentation screen, a poster, or on volunteers’ phones.
- Show an educational video about 30×30, parks, or marine protected areas. Here is a sample.
- Have staff or volunteers greet attendees and ask them to take action. Tip: have volunteers pull up the QR code image on their phone so attendees can easily scan and take the action!
- After you provide an opportunity for attendees to take action, invite them to share this action with their friends and networks by posting on social media or sending the WorldOceanDay.org/30×30 website via text message or any mode of communication
Larger time commitment:
Engage attendees in a creative and active way to take action
Set up a station or space during your event where attendees can share their opinion in a visual or active way. All of the responses you generate can be used for further 30×30 promotion by sharing the end product or result with your community in a variety of ways! For any of these options, utilize the “why 30×30” images with the various reasons why people want to protect more nature to help attendees easily take action.
Time commitment: 1 hour to prepare, more management required
Ideas and resources:
Artistic visual – Ask attendees to share their answers to the 30×30 action by asking them to contribute to a collective art piece! Suggested steps:
- First, ask everyone to take action online by scanning the 30×30 QR code, then ask them if they also want to participate in the collective art piece.
- Idea #1: Print out the “why 30×30” images, put them on a large piece of paper or wall, give all attendees three post-it-notes and ask them to add their post-its to three of the top reasons they choose.
- Idea #2: Print out a variety of nature- and ocean-themed paper cut outs and invite people to write a reason why they want to protect more nature on the cut-out then tape it to a giant poster hung up on a wall.
Photo booth – Set up a photo booth station and ask attendees to take a photo with their reasons for supporting 30×30. Suggested steps:
- First, ask everyone to take action online by scanning the 30×30 QR code, then ask them if they also want to participate in the photo booth.
- Pick a backdrop like the ocean itself, another place in nature or use the 30×30 poster/banner to print and use as a backdrop for people to stand in front of when they take their photo.
- Print out the “why 30×30” images so attendees can use them as a prop in their photo.
- Ask attendees to pick 1-3 of their top reasons and then hold them up for a photo.
- BONUS: ask attendees to post their own photo on social media using the sample social media posts in this toolkit.
- TIP: be sure that you ask people for permission to use these photos if you plan to post them online or compile them and promote them for public use.
Recording booth – set up a recording booth station and ask attendees to share their answer to the question “why is protecting our lands, water, and ocean important to you?”. Suggested steps:
- First, ask everyone to take action online by scanning the 30×30 QR code, then ask them if they also want to participate in the recording booth.
- Follow the steps above in “photo booth” but instead of taking a photo, ask people to share their answers verbally!
- Learn more about how to put on a “recording booth” from this example of U.S. based zoos, aquariums, and museums holding recording booths to capture their visitor’s opinions. Watch the compilation videos of people’s opinions here!
- BONUS: ask attendees to post their own video to their social media followers and ask everyone to take the 30×30 action in celebration of World Ocean Day. Share the Social Media Toolkit and various 30×30 graphics to make it easy.
- TIP: be sure that you ask people for permission to use these photos if you plan to post them online or compile them and promote them for public use.
Specifically for kids – Use the 30×30 postcards or coloring pages to allow kids to share their opinion in a more creative and accessible way. Suggested steps:
- Provide some educational context on why protecting our lands, waters, and ocean is important – check out these resources from World Ocean Day for Schools! This 1-minute video specific to 30×30 can also be used for certain age groups.
- Display the “why 30×30” images so kids can see some examples of why people might care.
- Engage the kids by asking them to pick 1-3 of the reasons that matter most to them and share their reasons out loud.
- Provide time for all the kids to draw a picture related to their answers or write a postcard to their local decision maker.
- Determine how best to share these inspiring messages with your community and/or elected officials to help raise awareness and grow support for the 30×30 movement.
