Beatrice Elikana Luchagula (she/her) is a Tanzanian marine scientist and youth ocean advocate
passionate about connecting ocean conservation with sustainable coastal livelihoods and
meaningful youth participation. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Marine Sciences from
the University of Dar es Salaam, Institute of Marine Sciences, and has gained experience
through marine conservation, fisheries, aquaculture, and community-based initiatives.
Her interests and work focus on community-based marine resource management,
sustainable coastal livelihoods, sustainable blue economy opportunities, youth ocean
literacy, and community economic empowerment. Her undergraduate research examined
the vulnerability of seaweed farming to climate change in Zanzibar, strengthening her
interest in the links between climate change, coastal livelihoods, and ocean resilience.
Beatrice is a co-founder and Chairperson of Ocean Bridgeway, a youth-led initiative
connecting young people with the ocean through conservation, education, research,
sustainable blue economy opportunities, and community engagement. Through Ocean
Bridgeway, she has helped organize youth-focused ocean activities, including World
Ocean Day celebrations, and is supporting the development of Ocean Clubs that
introduce students to ocean science, conservation, blue economy, and leadership.
As a Youth Advisory Council member, Beatrice hopes to bring the perspectives of young
people and coastal communities in Tanzania to global ocean conversations while learning
from and collaborating with young ocean leaders around the world.
