Sara de Brito Gíria (she/her), born and raised in Portugal, is a young professional who sails between Law and Economics of the Sea and International Relations, with a particular interest in ocean policy and maritime security.
Currently completing her Master’s degree in Law and Economics of the Sea, she navigates between international affairs and ocean governance, combining research and policy interests with her work at NOVA Ocean, the interdisciplinary research and innovation centre at NOVA University Lisbon.
Sara is also the co-founder of ECOP Portugal, the Portuguese node of the Early Career Ocean Professionals network under the UN Ocean Decade, which connects young professionals from different ocean-related fields and promotes their engagement with ocean science, policy, art and literacy.
Alongside this work, she is a Young Ocean Ambassador for Fish Free February and 71Blue, supporting initiatives that encourage more awareness of the pressures facing marine ecosystems.
Through her academic and professional work, Sara is particularly interested in creating bridges between young people, ocean knowledge and decision-making, while encouraging greater youth engagement in the future of our Ocean.
