Building Youth Ocean Leadership Across the Northern European Seas
Ocean action is often spoken about at a global level: global treaties, global campaigns, global goals. For many young people, the ocean becomes real through the waters closest to them: the coast they grew up near, the species they care about, the pollution they see, and the policies that shape their communities.
That is the idea behind a more “glocal” approach to youth ocean leadership. We are all connected by one world ocean, and protecting it requires global cooperation. At the same time, action becomes stronger when it is rooted in place. Young people need spaces where they can understand the bigger picture while also working with the specific challenges, cultures, languages, and political realities of their own region.
The Northern European Seas region is a powerful place to begin this regional work. The North and Baltic Seas are surrounded by countries with differing histories, languages, political systems, and relationships to the ocean. These waters are deeply connected. Pollution, overfishing, biodiversity loss, offshore energy development, shipping, and climate impacts do not follow national borders. What happens in one part of the region directly affects ecosystems, economies, and communities elsewhere.
The region also has real potential for youth-led action. It includes strong civil society networks, active student movements, important EU and regional policy frameworks, coastal communities, marine industries, and young people already working on climate and ocean justice. Many of them are asking similar questions from different places: how do we protect our seas, how do we influence decision-makers, and how do we turn concern into practical action?
Regional training aims to help connect these efforts. It gives young people a chance to learn from each other, compare experiences, build confidence, and understand how local action can link to wider policy processes. A regional focus also helps remind us that local seas are never isolated. The North Sea and Baltic Sea are part of one world ocean, and the choices made in this region contribute to the health of the ocean as a whole.
The Northern European Seas Youth Leadership Training is a first step toward building stronger relationships between young ocean advocates across the region. By creating spaces for shared learning and coordinated action, we can help grow a youth movement that is rooted in local realities, connected across borders, and guided by the understanding that all regions share responsibility for one connected ocean.
